Why this is not driving distance

Great-circle distance is the shortest path over the surface of the earth, which is rarely the path a road takes. Across a bay, a mountain range, or a river with few crossings, driving distance routinely runs 20 to 60 percent longer. For anything where travel time matters — service areas, delivery zones, territory planning — treat this as a lower bound and check the routes.

There is a second approximation underneath: each ZIP is reduced to a single centroid point. That is close enough in a dense city, where ZIPs are small, and quite loose in rural areas, where one ZIP can span hundreds of square miles.
