How EDDM works
- Choose carrier routes. You buy whole routes, not addresses. Every door on a selected route gets a piece.
- Print to flat dimensions. The piece must exceed 6.125 × 11.5 inches or be over 0.25 inches thick, and weigh under 3.3 ounces. A standard postcard is too small to qualify.
- Address it "POSTAL CUSTOMER". No names, no street addresses — that is the whole point of the programme.
- Bundle in 50s or 100s with a facing slip on each bundle.
- File PS Form 3587, one per ZIP code.
- Drop at the facility serving those routes and pay at the counter. A plan spanning several facilities means several trips.
Where mailers lose money
- Buying by radius instead of by budget. A three-mile circle can be 14,000 doors — nearly $3,700 in postage alone. Set the budget first and let the tool pick the routes that fit.
- Ignoring the drop-off count. Routes near a boundary often belong to different facilities. Four facilities is four trips, and that cost never shows up in a per-piece estimate.
- Missing the 200-piece minimum. A ZIP with only a sliver of coverage cannot be mailed at all. The planner drops those automatically and tells you.
- Printing before confirming counts. Delivery statistics lag reality. Confirm at the counter, then print.
- Assuming saturation equals response. EDDM is the cheapest way to reach everyone, which is different from the cheapest way to reach a customer. For a narrow target, addressed mail to a filtered list often costs less per response despite higher postage.
Verify before you print
If you are mailing to an addressed list rather than EDDM, run it through hygiene first — vacancy flags and undeliverable addresses are pure waste at $0.36 a piece and up.
